MIKE
MIKE
At just 19, MIKE’s music carries age beyond his years. Born in New Jersey, MIKE moved to London with his mother before settling in The Bronx for the remainder of his later teenage years. Both regions have had an audible influence on the young rapper’s music - in England he was immersed in grime and the music of King Krule, and in the United States he was turned on to Earl Sweatshirt and MF Doom. In New York, he discovered several artists with a similar ear and style, and formed his collective [sLUms]. Consisting of sixpress, dj ???, King Carter, Jazz Jodi, and DJ Mason, the group is a diverse range of producers and rappers who each make music about the tribulations of coming of age and being black in New York City.

Through his mixtapes Winter New York and Longest Day, Shortest Night, MIKE started to tell the story of his childhood, and with his most recent mixtape May God Bless Your Hustle he made a definitive statement on the current state of youth in New York. That project turned heads outside of MIKE’s immediate community in the city, earning praise from The FADER and the New Yorker, and being selected as Best New Music by Pitchfork. In the year following May God Bless Your Hustle MIKE released his EP By The Water via House Anxiety followed by his projects Black Soap and Renaissance Man via Lex Records. Themes about the depression and anxiety that accompany being young and African American abound throughout MIKE’s music, but a muted sense of hopefulness and certainty that he is moving towards ultimate triumph is the motor quietly propelling things forward.

The 24 year old rapper/singer, is a rare hybrid of sultry and soulful R&B paired with undeniable hip-hop bars. As a Charlotte, NC native and current resident of Philadelphia, Ivy’s sound draws on a diverse set of influences from southern rap, to gospel, to spoken-word, to boom-bap. Her debut project EDEN was released in April 2016 to a welcoming community of hip-hop heads and hipsters alike, and most recently was ranked #27 on Bandcamp’s Best Albums of 2016 list. In 2017, she released the two-part project, “EAST” and “WEST,” and was featured as Spotify’s Fresh Finds spotlight artist.
