Purling Hiss
Purling Hiss
Since 2009, the fuzzing rock power of PURLING HISS has taken many different forms, all emanating from of MIKE POLIZZE's instinctive approach to playing guitar, writing songs and hooking a feeling from disparate memories, sensations and desired effects. At times carefree and apparently footloose in the world, other times intensely focused and wrathful, Purling Hiss are the orphaned kids of last century’s rock and roll generations, lost in a society that has forgotten its way but determined to find their feet again. High Bias moves with rageful, dazed humor and soulfulness against the darkening times in which we find ourselves. With no way out, Purling Hiss hit today’s bullshit head-on, employing pounding psych-rock and punk effects, slipping signature Hissian backup “oooo-ooh”s and Polizze’s blistering guitar pile-ups in a full-bodied, head-ripping brew. High Bias is a brave and bold blast of popular music that lays it on the line to keep the rebellion alive in the streets of our mind. This is rock we will need in our ears as we venture into the darkness, and the next unexplored stretch of the wasteland.
The Young
The Young
The Austin, TX quartet known as The Young have kept a somewhat shadowy profile since their inception in 2007. With little regard for public reception, The Young opt for something far more experimental in nature. On the heels of a 2010 appearance on Matador’s ‘Casual Victim Pile’ Austin compilation, the band would record an astonishing debut full-length for Mexican Summer, that staked a claim for The Young being the-next-great-American-psychedelic-wonder.
Over the course of a year+ , a new record on Matador, sharing stages with the likes of Sic Alps, Kurt Vile, Pierced Arrows, Endless Boogie and other masters of modern rock guitar, it would not be an exaggeration to say their meticulous interplay has become both uncanny and unstoppable. The only thing quiet about this band is their confidence.
Far-Out Fangtooth
Far-Out Fangtooth
Existing in the musty shadows of the Philly scene, Far-Out Fangtooth have built a most unique foundation of sound, mixing early Cramps swamp / garage blackout, nascent Bauhaus post-punk / quasi-goth bleakness as well as an uncanny nod to the witchy, ethereal leather glam of first-generation Blue Öyster Cult. Their debut LP, Pure & Disinterested, follows a limited-edition 7-inch for local label Ian! Records. In recent months, Far-Out Fangtooth has seen live action on bills with the likes of Times New Viking, Circle Pit, Blank Dogs and R. Stevie Moore. The band intends to launch a full-scale US tour to coincide with the release of Pure & Disinterested, so keep your eyes (and ears) peeled.
