R5 Young Composer Series : A Winged Victory For The Sullen + Bing & Ruth

Hellos – Over the past three years, we have been thrilled to find some pretty big success in bringing some of our favorite young composers from all over the world to come perform in unique, alternative spaces like the First Unitarian Church (ie. not “performing arts venues”, which are generally pretty stuffy). It makes us so happy to be able to provide a setting which reflects our ideals and ethos from doing punk shows for 18+ years while simultaneously bringing along some new people who typically do not listen to “classical music”. In other words – we want to have these young artists play a cool show in a “weird” venue for some new fans. We have three composers performing live in the Sanctuary of … MORE >>>

Amazing Show Tonight with Composer Ben Frost at Boot & Saddle

Tonight we are thrilled to welcome Australia-born, Iceland-based composer Ben Frost. He recently released an album on Mute which was heralded across the globe including a “Best New Music” nod from Pitchfork. His records are scary. And beautiful. They’re the stuff of dreams. And nightmares. They’re like soundtracks for films that can never be made, the music conjuring up images that can only exist in the imagination. It’s musical magic, or sonic alchemy, whatever it is, it’s something few have mastered, and even those that have, barely approach the mysterious mastery of Ben Frost, whose previous record, By The Throat, remains one of the most terrifying documents of electronic sound art we have ever heard, weaving the sounds of snarling wolves into thick swells … MORE >>>

Flying Lotus at The Tower Theater This Tuesday

Four time “Best New Music” winner (does anyone else have that many?) FLYING LOTUS will be coming back to Philly on Tues Oct 14 at The Tower Theater. By far one of the best electronic live shows we have ever seen thanks in part to his ridiculous 3D visuals. What makes Flying Lotus so unique and sound so ahead of his peers is that you can’t sum up his music with one word, genre or catch all phrase. Yes there are moments of electronica, and hints of a more hip-hop minded past but there is also a nice use of instrumentation including harps, strings, horns, and keys that help give it all a rounded and celestial feel. But along with those majestic and pretty moments … MORE >>>

Tonight – Ambient Composer Christopher Willits – Highly Recommended

We are VERY excited to bring ambient composer Christopher Willits to Philadelphia this evening. He is a multimedia artist – an electronic music and guitar pioneer, composer, producer, photographer, filmmaker and system designer. Named “the Picasso of sound”, Christopher uses his self-designed software tools to “paint with his guitar”, creating “mesmerizing, intricate electronic soundscapes” and lush audiovisual performances of weaving patterns, texture, and harmony. Check out the above video to get an idea of what to expect for his live performance tonight. Willits creates immersive experiences of overlapping sound and light. Working solo and in collaboration with the likes of Ryuichi Sakamoto, Matmos, Zach Hill (Hella/Death Grips), and Taylor Deupree, Christopher has released over 20 albums within the last decade. We HIGHLY recommend you check him … MORE >>>

Young Composer Series Returns w/ Richard Parry (Arcade Fire) + Nico Muhly

Our Shows At The First Unit Church Are Coming To An End (Kind Of)

Hellos –  We have some sad news to pass along. As you likely know, we (r5) have booked thousands of shows at The First Unitarian Church since 1996. A bunch of now super famous and legendary bands got their first “big break” there…. Arcade Fire, Mumford & Sons, At The Drive In, TV On The Radio, the xx etc. Even Ryan Gosling came through to play at the now infamous venue. In the last few years, we have been fortunate enough to open two dedicated venues, Union Transfer and Boot & Saddle. With these new venues and a slew of other that have opened up around Philadelphia, it’s become increasingly difficult to book bands who want to play the church. The church heavily relied on … MORE >>>
