Flying Lotus at The Tower Theater This Tuesday

Four time “Best New Music” winner (does anyone else have that many?) FLYING LOTUS will be coming back to Philly on Tues Oct 14 at The Tower Theater. By far one of the best electronic live shows we have ever seen thanks in part to his ridiculous 3D visuals. What makes Flying Lotus so unique and sound so ahead of his peers is that you can’t sum up his music with one word, genre or catch all phrase. Tonight – Ambient Composer Christopher Willits – Highly Recommended

We are VERY excited to bring ambient composer Christopher Willits to Philadelphia this evening. He is a multimedia artist – an electronic music and guitar pioneer, composer, producer, photographer, filmmaker and system designer. Named “the Picasso of sound”, Christopher uses his self-designed software tools to “paint with his guitar”, creating “mesmerizing, intricate electronic soundscapes” and lush audiovisual performances of weaving patterns, texture, and harmony. Check out the above video to get an idea of what to expect for his live performance tonight. Young Composer Series Returns w/ Richard Parry (Arcade Fire) + Nico Muhly

Over the past two years, we have been thrilled to find success in bringing some of our favorite young composers from all over the world to come perform in unique, alternative spaces like the First Unitarian Church (ie. not “performing arts venues”, which are generally pretty stuffy).  It makes us so happy to be able to provide a setting which reflects our ideals and ethos from doing punk shows for 18+ years while simultaneously bringing along some new people who typically do not listen to “classical music”. In other words – we want to have these young artists play a cool show in a weird venue for some new fans. Our Shows At The First Unit Church Are Coming To An End (Kind Of)

Hellos –  We have some sad news to pass along. As you likely know, we (r5) have booked thousands of shows at The First Unitarian Church since 1996. A bunch of now super famous and legendary bands got their first “big break” there…. Arcade Fire, Mumford & Sons, At The Drive In, TV On The Radio, the xx etc. Even Ryan Gosling came through to play at the now infamous venue. In the last few years, we have been fortunate enough to open two dedicated venues, Union Transfer and Boot & Saddle. With these new venues and a slew of other that have opened up around Philadelphia, it’s become increasingly difficult to book bands who want to play the church. Punk Rock Flea Market : Table Reservations Begin Today + Charity

  As we mentioned a few weeks back we are excited to let you know that the PUNK ROCK FLEA MARKET will be taking place on Saturday December 13th and Sunday December 14th. Just like last year’s holiday market, we are only allowing sellers to be there on ONE of the dates (not both). That means there will be completely different sellers / things to buy on each day! As always, your $3 donation gets you into both days as well as the long awaited return of the PHILADELPHIA RECORD RIOT (a 50+ dealer record show) which will be taking place across the street from the flea market at The Starlight Ballroom on Saturday December 13th. Such amazing weather for one of our biggest weekend’s ever! Two super positive and great events back to back, starting with Saturday’s “SOLSTICE IN THE CITY” at the Kimmel Center for The Performing Arts. It’s an all night event with food, drinks, performing arts and music spread out all over the building. There will be DJs in the lobby, jazz artists playing in the lounge. Jose Garces will have food and drinks made especially for the Summer Solstice and most importantly REAL ESTATE, SAN FERMIN and BEVERLY (featuring Frankie Rose) will be playing live inside Verizon Hall. Charity Things : Punk Rock Flea Raises $10,000 + Kurt Vile Benefit

Hello – We wanted to thank everyone who came out to the Punk Rock Flea Market this past weekend! As the flea market continues to grow in popularity we recently decided to add a charitable contribution to it. Thankfully several thousand of you came out on Saturday and Sunday and we are very happy to let you know that we are able to donate $10,000 to the rehabilitation of Ralph Brooks Park in the Point Breeze section of South Philadelphia (via the Make The World Better Foundation – please read more about it below).
