Defiance, Ohio
Defiance, Ohio
Starting as a three-piece band in Columbus, Ohio; Defiance, Ohio has evolved into a family of musicians spread across three cities that has shared nearly a decade of performing and recording together.

Drawing on the diverse and changing musical interests and practices of its members, the band is unique in the way songwriting has been shared between almost all of the members. While the members strive to incorporate musical influences with a fluidity that contradicts the rigidity of genre, the band’s practice remains grounded in the culture of do-it-yourself punk and other vibrant, participatory communities. Lyrically, Defiance, Ohio’s songs often reflect the personal resonance of navigating larger social dynamics like geography, race, violence, sexual orientation and mental health.

To date, Defiance, Ohio has released four full-length recordings as well as split-EPs and compilation tracks through self-release and a number of independent labels. During the summer of 2011, Defiance, Ohio is Elizabeth Gibbs, Geoff Hing, Theo Hilton, Will Staler and Ryan Woods.
Mischief Brew (All Ages Show)
Mischief Brew (All Ages Show)
In June of 2000, after spending four years screaming in a punk band called The Orphans, Erik Petersen confined himself to a basement with an acoustic guitar, a rickety drum kit, a mandolin, and a four-track to stir a bunch of ideas together into a stew of songs. The resulting concoction was “Mirth: or, Certain Verses Composed and Fitted to Tunes, for the Delight and Recreation of All,” an eight-song demo cassette of acoustic punk influenced by medieval danses and raucous dust-raisers. On the spine of the tape (duplicated DIY-style by partners Denise Vertucci and Erik, later forming Fistolo Records), it read: “A Taste Of The Mischief Brew,” and included a “Folk The System” patch. There were no names or press pictures. Just a couple cryptic woodcuts, circle-A’s, illustrations of jesters and goblins, and a PO Box as a contact method.
Since then, Mischief Brew has grown to include several more humans, a few pug dogs, a lot more volume, and a bunch of pots and pans to bang on. It’s not unusual to see members scavenging around for scraps of metal and pieces of wood before a show, to use as percussion for a live set. And it might be the only punk rock band to feature a vibraharp. Since that scratchy demo tape, they have done numerous U.S. and European tours and have played everywhere from the Electric Factory in Philly to old bomb shelters in Germany, from CBGBs (the original one) to ABC No Rio in NYC, from 924 Gilman in Berkeley to the Trumbullplex in Detroit...not to mention in attics, basements, barns, underneath train bridges, and on rocking boats underneath the Williamsburg Bridge on the East River.
High Dive
High Dive started as a 3-piece in Bloomington, Indiana in 2010 and released our self-titled debut album in December of 2011. Since then, we have grown to include more people and instruments and broadened our musical influences, releasing a digital-only EP, "These Are Days," in June of 2013, which is now available on cassette, and a one-sided 12" in September of 2014.
Purple 7
Purple 7
The Purple 7 is a band that features Will from DEFIANCE, OH/LANDLORD, Chris Mott from LANDLORD, and Patrick Jennings from the HOT NEW MEXICANS. Conceived in Chris's attic and Will's basement at MAGNETIC SOUTH on several experimental 4 track sessions while on leave from Landlord, the band has taken on new dimensions since Patrick arrived in town and set up shop in a suburban style studio on the south side of Bloomington. They were destined, it seems, to be in a band together.
