This June 2014, Rat Fist—a loud, fast, rock band formed by Randy Randall of No Age and Sean McGuiness of Pissed Jeans—will kick off their first weeklong East Coast tour. Rat Fist is the result of a friendship that began over a decade ago in 2003 when Randall’s former band Wives (Los Angeles, CA) and McGuiness’ former band Navies (Washington DC) played a house show together in Washington DC. It was then that the two quickly recognized they had a common love for loud, fast, heavy music.

In the years that followed, Randall and McGuiness’ paths crossed countless times touring the U.S. and Europe in their respective bands and they soon found themselves as label mates at Sup Pop Records. They always talked about forming a band together, however their current projects kept them fully occupied. Finally, after both becoming fathers they realized there was no time like the present to fire it up.

In February 2014, McGuiness flew from to Los Angeles to work with Randall on writing and recording a new album. Over an 8 day weekend they worked with F. Bermudez in his analog studio to record a collection of refreshing, face-melting, fist-pounding cuts.

Led by that charismatic crooner of an international sports enthusiast John Sharkey III (Clockcleaner, Puerto Rico Flowers) and backed by Andrew Mackie Nelson (Ceremony, Paint it Black, Puerto Rico Flowers) and Mike Sneeringer (formerly from Purling Hiss, Puerto Rico Flowers), the Philadelphian group Dark Blue serve up two fistfuls of velvet lined vitriol for the terrace chanting masses on their debut single for the Jade Tree label. The A Side, Just Another Night With The Boys – an ode to an evening of soccer hooliganism – sonically harkens back to a time in the early 80s when U.K. boot boy bands such as Blitz and Angelic Upstarts shied away from their rough ‘n’ tumble comfort zone to cover Joy Division and Bowie tunes. The flip is a somewhat faithful rendering of ‘Hungry for Love’, the opener from John Cale’s confounding and obscure-as-hell 1984 ‘beach pop’ album Caribbean Sunset. These two tracks recorded by noted Philadelphian producer Jeff Zeigler (Kurt Vile, The War on Drugs, Purling Hiss) are here to whet your appetite for the forthcoming Jade Tree full length. Bon appetit!
