Rank/Xerox
Rank/Xerox
An urgent, desolate sound that evokes collapsing modernist architecture, awkward photographs and polyester trousers. Post-punk nausea for those that would rather reach for Soma Holiday than anything out of Leeds in 1982. This is my favorite local band. Their music is constantly moving, a million parts in action creating a picture that’s stark and powerful, and there’re only three people in this band - one Australian accent and two American ones. Former members of HC acts Burning Sensation and Jump Off A Building now making out of place music for desperate times. They are excellent live, propulsive energy and power to flatten all dispassionate audiences. I’ve heard people compare them to Zounds, I think they are more in like with the Proletariat with some Middle Class aggro snot injections. At any rate, this LP is a totality of nervous energy and dark movement, it sort of makes me think of the Kebab song ‘We Live In A System’, that paranoid force. It’s hard to write about a band you love sometimes, it’s easier to dismiss things than to explain what the secret ingredient is that makes something rule…Listening to this on headphones in a dark review corridor it feels like a transportation device. Lyrics are incisive surgical cuts, evocative and nightmarish constructions. It’s stark, dark music with underlying currents, Peter Hook-ish basslines and scratched out guitars and the drums are like a more organized Palmolive! For real, if you like skating around town with Warsaw on your headphones, this is your sound.
Rat Columns
Rat Columns
Rat Columns is a trio from San Francisco, California that generates dark, ill-fitting pop wanderings, introspective jangle and chime, mangled noises and various points between. The band was started by David West in the isolated environs of Perth, Western Australia, and following a move to the northern hemisphere the trio format was happened upon with the addition of Matt Bleyle (drums/guitar) and Jon Young (bass guitar). Matt Bleyle is well known for his warped pop acts Violent Change & Sopors, and the semi-legendary SF punks The Abi Yoyos. David West has a scattered track record consisting of SF post-punks Rank/Xerox and Perth ragers Burning Sensation, amongst others. The three recorded the LP 'Sceptre Hole' in the second half of 2011. As on the previous four-song 7", James Vinciguerra of Total Control/Soviet Valves/AIDS contributed some drums to the effort. Sure, 'Sceptre Hole' flies closer in to the pop sun than before it also keeps a toe in the murky waters of guitar noise and dour ambience.
The Bad Doctors
The Bad Doctors
The Bad Doctors have been active in the Philly music scene for about a year now. Its members are Brian Bullock, Luke Nally, and Matt McDermott. The band formed with the concept of creating serious and interesting rock and roll, in an attempt to fill the expanding void in Philadelphia's rock community. They formed a tight fan-base by playing house parties and basement shows relentlessly.
Their first media attention came with their self-released demo Distractions in June 2011. It was immediately followed by Bloodstains Across Philadelphia, a vinyl 12" compilation of local hardcore punk and metal bands released by West Philadelphia's Eaglebauer Records. The Bad Doctors are currently releasing a 7" single through Eaglebauer and planning a tour with Dry Feet in March.
