Daniel Johnston

Johnston's musical work gained some notoriety when he moved to Austin, Texas. Johnston began to attract the attention of the local press and gain a following augmented in numbers by his habit of handing out tapes to people he met. Live performances were well-attended and hotly anticipated.
His local standing led to him being featured in a 1985 episode of the MTV program The Cutting Edge featuring performers from Austin's "New Sincerity" music scene. Subsequently he performed at the 1985 Woodshock music festival in Austin, where he was featured in a short documentary of the festival, Woodshock. Through the next few years Johnston toured extensively across the world, and continued to attract press attention. In 2008, Dick Johnston, Daniel's brother and manager, revealed that "a movie deal based on the artist's life and music had been finalized with a tentative 2011 release." His latest album, "Is and Always Was," is set to be released early this October.

Sweet Lights

Sweet Lights aka Shai Halperin cut his teeth as lead songsmith for The Capitol Years, a long time Philadelphia fixture that saw members of The War on Drugs, Nightlands, and others pass through its ranks. The band enjoyed varied critical accolades including a BBC 2 Single of the Week, an appearance at the Glastonbury Festival, and high praise from Rolling Stone and Pitchfork. The Capitol Years toured extensively supporting the likes of The Walkmen, the Pixies and Daniel Johnston. Sparked by his cover version of Johnston's "True Love Will Find You in the End", Shai developed a close working relationship with the legendary outsider artist, one which lead to The Capitol Years joining Johnston on several tours as well as on stage performing backing band duties.
Sweet Lights was sparked by an initial flurry of home recording which lead to 2 albums worth of new compositions. With more songs than bandmates to learn them, Shai began recording all the instruments himself, and Sweet Lights was born.
Sweet Lights - Sweet Lights is a masterful mix of dynamic, harmony-soaked song craft, innovative arrangements and surreal lyricism. With a hint of ELO here and a splash of Beach House there, the album shifts shapes and vibes from one song to the next. Making its way from the bedroom studio to the pages of MOJO (4 stars) and Uncut (8/10), Sweet Lights has now become a live show, alternating between onemanband performances and full band freakouts.
