Here We Go Magic
A bit lost in the stacks amongst 2009's glo-fi and chillwave and indie's general psychedelic turn is this quiet gem, the product of Luke Temple letting his meditative instincts rise to meet his romantic tendencies. Noisy interstitials aside, HWGM might be the year's Exhibit A proving the undeniable pleasures of simple, repeated phrases swathed in diffuse, hazy atmospherics. The groovy folk mantra about a lonely little vampire ("Fangela") the Mobius Strip-styled ode to the joy of simply staring straight ahead ("Tunnelvision"), the sensuous number that sounds like it was recorded in Animal Collective's studio-water-bong ("I Just Want to See You Underwater"). If the spirit of Shuggie Otis' "Strawberry Letter 23" hovered over any album over the past 12 months, this is the one
Oberhofer
Form a band! Maybe call it after your family name because you like the way it sounds (shit, if it worked for Bon Jovi then who's to argue). Record those songs in the basement of your parents' house in Tacoma. When that burns down, shake it off and move to New York. Find a new band to play with, start working on a symphony (no really, do it), mix your newfound formal training with the noisy exuberance of youth. Get raucous! Fast forward nine months and release a 7": "o0O0o0O0o" - A ramshackle sugar rush about endless summers and the city. Brooklyn
The Powder Kegs
The Powder Kegs are a band living in Philadelphia, consisting of Dan Maroti, Ryan Dieringer, Dylan Hume, and Sam McDougle. They were raised in NYC, where they started the band together in 2005. They were an acclaimed old-time string band for several years - they busked endlessly, toured, won a band competition on NPR in front of 5 million listeners, then started writing pop songs.
TPK released their debut LP, "You and Your Right Now," in 2008. It was recorded with Jeremy Backofen, producer of albums by The Felice Brothers, The Walkmen, Frightened Rabbit, & Mice Parade. They just released their new E.P. "Empty Side," which was produced by Philly's own Brian McTear (Mazarin, The A-sides, Espers) of Miner St. Recordings.
