Evangelicals (playing JBs in Nov) Get A Big Interview In Pitchfork - This Band Is Good

One of our fav new artists/bands - EVANGELICALS, who just happen to be playing an R5 show at Johnny Brendas on Saturday November 18th, was just featured on Pitchfork today. Check It !

As anyone who can differentiate the letter "n" from the letter "l" can figure out, Norman, Oklahoma is not normal. This unassuming Oklahoma City satellite town has a noble tradition of eccentrics that take a Silly Putty approach to pop music: Chainsaw Kittens, Starlight Mints, and of course, the Flaming Lips. Say hello to the new kids in town: Evangelicals, whose wonderfully warped debut album, So Gone (Misra), reels recklessly through the years-- 1970s AM radio gold sounds, twee 80s Britpop, abrasive 90s American indie-rock, and contemporary beard-folk-- and yields a disoriented, dislocating sense of time and space. Until last year, Evangelicals existed only in the excitable mind of 24-year-old songwriter Josh Jones, but have since fortified into a trio (featuring multi-instrumentalist Kyle Davis and drummer Austin Stephens) that will spend the better part of this year on the road spreading the gospel (including a fall tour with Serena Maneesh). Pitchfork contacted an apologetically phlegmy Jones to discuss the happy accidents and unhappy circumstances that went into making So Gone so good.

R5 Podcast Mania - Get Ready !!!!!!

Boo-ya. It's 2006 and we decided that we are going to start our own radio show / podcast. We'll be playing upcoming R5 artists or just "regular ol'" music that we enjoy. The first show (and all of the ones after this) will be recorded live at our office (aka my bedroom) with the R5 staff. I can promise that the first couple shows will be a sloppy mess with all sorts of problems and technical difficulties. We'll also most likely be wasted - which is good, so I can just pass out in my bed, five feet from the "recording studio". We'll also play interviews with concert goers, artists and anyone else that's fun or funny. Don't expect this to be too serious. The first show will be available for download on September 1st. I believe it will also be available from ITunes starting on Sept 8th.

THE INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAY IS AWESOMEZ

Woah The Most Kick Ass Awesome New Venue To Open In October !

They already popular and totally radical bar/restaurant JOHNNY BRENDA'S located in the Fishtown section of Philadelphia will be opening it's upstairs to local and national bands from around the country. They spent months and months to make the 2nd room into the ABSOLUTE NICEST small room in Philadelphia. Check out the pictures below. On top of that there is the best beer selection, a balcony (where you can actually see the bands), fancy handcrafted tables and stools, great food and a sound system that DESTROYS.

JBs is located right at the intersection of Frankford and Girard Sts. Just one block from the El stop. A 13 minute bikeride from center city. I even sometimes jog there from my house in South Philly. The shows will be 21+ ONLY. Sorry Kids! As you know we have always done all age shows but the church is getting too costly and expensive for these smaller shows. This give sus the opportunity to book shows for smaller (and more local) bands that we like, but can not host at the church. I would estimate that 90% of the bands that we will end up hosting at JBs will return to the church to play an all ages show within the year.

Just to make sure we are all on the same page - we are NOT moving our operations over there. We are just going to be doing the occasional show that is too small for the church. Johnny Brenda's is not an R5 venue. They are running and booking their shows. Again we are just doing the occassional show with them over there. That said we are so stoked and lucky to be working with such wonderful people.

Guys get ready - this room is really going to change the scene here in Philadelphia. And that's a good thing !

Spaceboy Music To Close - New Box Office Info

After almost ten years of exsistence, Spaceboy Music is calling it a day. Here is what they have to say :

After about a decade of life on Philadelphia's South Street, Spaceboy Music has decided to retire and close its doors late-September. We will miss the excitement when bands like Notwist, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Sigur Ros, Belle and Sebastian, Espers, RJD2, Sunn)), Jack Rose and Radiohead were new and we could bring them to you. We were always excited to share what we liked with you and were even more excited when you showed us something new.

The world is different. The music industry has changed, technology has changed, South Street has changed. For Spaceboy Music, its time for a change.

Prior to the doors closing, we will be selling the contents of the store with 20% off everything sale starting Saturday 8/26. Everything is for sale. - except Max - although all offers will be considered.

Philadelphia has an amazing collection of independent record stores and we will miss being a part of that community and we will miss you. Please stop in and say goodbye.

As always, thanks for choosing an independent retailer.

Spaceboy Music
704 South Street
Philadelphia, PA

As you know - Spaceboy Music has served as our box office for several years. We are in the process of working out the details for two new box office locations. Details should be finalized by week's end. R5 Productions tickets will continued to be sold till the final day of store in September.

Pointless Fest Post Taken Down / Refund Info

The amount of false / untrue / insane info posted via comments was getting to be a bit out of control. We'll finally have full refund info for you tomorrow (monday august 28th). Sorry it took this long but we never had to cancel a fest before because of a riot. It's not 100% in stone yet - but essentially this is how it will work :

- 4 Day Pass Tickets : You'll get 40% of your total purchase refunded ($18). Because two days of the fest happened - you will not be refunded the full amount.

- Individual Tickets For Saturday : You'll get 50% of your purchase refunded or have the option to use your ticket at another R5 Productions event.

- Individual Tickets For Sunday : RAMBO / PAINT IT BLACK and a bunch more will be playing a make up show in a few weeks. You may use your ticket for this show.

All refunds will automatically be charged back to your card (which take a few days to show up on your card). Any tickets purchased at Spaceboy will need to be refunded via postal mail (again check back here for details) . Once this is ironed out and approved by the legal department (aka our lawyers) - we'll post it all, with ever single possible question hopefully answered

Our Media Player / radio Thing Works (freshly updated too)

Holy Shit! We updated the media player (we haven't done that since April 14th) . We loaded it up with all new songs from artists playing R5 shows in the next two months. To check it out just goto the main shows page and click the "Launch The R5 Media Player" button. You can also listen to it via our MySpace Page

It's an awesome way to listen to favorite artists and more importantly discover new ones. Just leave it running in the background. That's what we do here in the office.

Cardigans Postpone Tour / Khonnor Show Canceled

THE CARDIGANS have apparently postponed their upcoming US tour, which includes the Sept 16th date at The First Unitarian Church (we are SUUUUPPPPEEERRRRRR BUMMED). On a MESSAGE posted on their Message Board the band cites an unapproved tour budget. Which sounds like miscommunication between management and the band (or something) . If the show is rescheduled we will obviously let you know right away. For now refunds will be issued at all points of purchase.

This Saturday's August 5th show with KHONNOR has been canceled. Necessary work needs to be completed in the chapel room. Refunds will be issued at all points of purchase. The chapel show with David Pajo on August 3rd is unaffected (work begins on Friday afternoon)
