It's Official - We Just Booked The Craziest Show Of Our Existence

Grammy nominated, Gold album recording artists THE CLIPSE will be playing a R5 show in the first week of November !

For those not in the known the clipse are a hiphop duo from Virgina Beach who blew up in 2002/03 with their #1 album - LORD WILLIN . You definitely know the two big singles from that album GRIDING and WHEN THE LAST TIME, both produced by Pharell and The Neptunes.

After becoming "THE" Hiphop group back then, selling a shit ton or records, being played on MTV every 5 minutes and appearing in every magazine ever - their label, Arista, messily merged with J Records. This caused THE CLIPSE to be shuffled to Jive/Zomba, an imprint historically unable to market gritty hip-hop.

For a brief moment, they sat idly, intermittently whining about their still-forthcoming album "Hell Hath No Fury" and plotting their return. But lacking the backing of den mother Pharrell Williams, who launched their careers with "Grindin'" and produced their entire debut with partner Chad Hugo, Clipse were toast. So, of course, in an attempt to stonewall Jive into voiding their contract, they recorded last year's most astonishing mixtape series, "We Got It 4 Cheap". Which made almost every critic's Top 10 of 2005 list. Including Pitchfork - which ranked it the 15th best album of 2005 as well as placing two singles #3 and #16 in their favorite singles of 2005.

With the strength/populariy of the mixtapes - and the new found popularity of their latest single - Mr Me Too (which has been on MTV like every single hour) their album will finally be released on Halloween of this year.

As Pitchfork says : "Starting this year, October 31 will no longer be known as Halloween. No, from now on, it will go down in history as the day that Clipse's long-overdue, highly anticipated, earth-shattering second album, "Hell Hath No Fury", is finally going to be released. A couple of lucky Pitchfork staffers heard Hell Hath No Fury, which was produced completely by the Neptunes, this week. They say there's "nothing close to filler" and it's "the best rap album of the year." That's all we're allowed to say about it right now, though."

Get familiar! We heard some of it and most of the tracks are sinisterly minimalist. It's fucking BONKERZ (and my own ringtone for the last few weeks)

Anonymous clearly doesn't appreciate the eloquence of the Brothers Thornton.

Best in the business right now. And yes, this is a fucking crazy/awesome booking.

Kudos.

Clipse has put out some of the most ridiculously unique hip hop in the entire game, let alone just the past few years, and they've only dropped one album and two mixtapes. Best style and flow with some of the greatest one-liners ever, as well as an amazing lyrial ability. I don't think anybody has rapped about hustling this well since Biggie. Nobody in the hip hop game compares to them.

nothing against rap, but I go to R5 to hear about indie/punk bands that other media do not cover ad nauseum.

I could turn on one of the five lame MTV channels and hear these guys anytime... but I don't.

I agree, MF Doom would be a "crazier" booking.

Actually it wouldn't, because it already happened.

...Kool Keith compares to them, he tops them. I'm not talking Dr. Octagon either...Oct is gone ten years now, the new album wasn't even made by him, it's all stolen vocal tracks. I'm talking about all of his new material from the last few years (especially Comi$$ioner / Lost Masters 2). He's the most unique/innovative...do your homework. Can't be unique rapping about hustling, who doesn't do that? Shit's boring.

As for MF Doom, I'm really surprised he hasn't played an R5er yet.

Snobby post I know, but anytime I see someone praised higher than Keith ("nobody in the hip hop game compares to them"), I gotta shut it down and encourage more attention on him, love the man!

All right, I can rephrase that...I'm surprised MF Doom hasn't played in the last 6 years with R5.

I'm not sure how I feel about the Clipse, but yet again I'm amazed at the following that Kieth gets. He's an interesting producer, a below average rapper, and yet the whole indy-backpack set thinks he's the best thing since sliced bread.

Kool Kieth is a cult (for proof, just wait for the angry comments that this is garunteed to generate). That doesn't make him the best, or even a decent, rapper.

And Jeff- good for you that you only go to R5 shows for indie rock, but why should anyone else care? Ever consider that not everyone in Philly shares your musical tastes? Ever think that promoting a diverse set of acts is good for the entire music scene and city? And please point me to the MTV video for the Clipse's UNDERGROUND mixtapes. I'm guessing you didn't even read the post or understand the 1st thing about underground hip-hop...

The Clipse show in NYC may have been the best hip hop show I've ever laid eyes on. And I've seen Wu-Tang, son. Off Wu-Tang Forever, son. I've seen Jay-Z, herb. Tribe Called Quest. De La fucking Soul. I've even seen Biggie. That's right, Biggie. I've fucking seen Arrested Development. Ya heard??? PM Dawn, motherfucker. PM fucking Dawn.
As my boy Slim said over at the Stamps, "People who think MF Doom is better than Clipse = White people"

Right on Sean! While i don't think this is your craziest show - either in terms of size of the artist or the weirdness of the material - i very much applaud you taking this on. Clipse's 'Lord Willin' was the best album of the year when it dropped; diverse Neptunes production and heartfelt lyrics combined with witty wordplay and smooth flows made Clipse's first LP a true surprise. What's even more surprising is they've been able to follow it up with more quality material, and word is that their live show is nothing to sneeze at. I can't believe in 2006 people are still so closed-minded about hip-hop, it boggles my mind.

p.s. that Doom/Jedi Mind show at the Rotunda was one of the sickest joints i've seen in my life!

I would have to say that "people who think mf doom is better than clipse = white people" pretty much sums up this conversation.

he played like 3 years ago. Maybe you just jumped on the band wagon of shitty rappers a little to late. The only reason you think MFDOOM would be "crazy" is because he got big off of Danger Mouse and you prob. ride that dick hard because of Adult Swim.

Mf Doom sucks and is a huge fucking gimmick and if you really think Clipse sucks and is not "crazy" for an R5 show, then you know nothing about hip hop or rap.
